EU Student Finance in the UK
Funding for EU Students in the UK
EU students beginning their studies in the UK from 2021 are no longer eligible for home fee status at undergraduate and postgraduate level, although there are some exceptions:
- Students who started their course in 2020/21 or earlier will continue to pay home fees for the duration of their course, up to graduation
- Irish nationals living in the UK and Ireland will continue to be able to live and study in the UK and continue to be eligible for home fee status
From the 1st August 2021, all EU students not registered under the EU Settlement Scheme will require a study visa and be considered international for tuition fee purposes, meaning they are unable to apply for a tuition fee or maintenance loan.
Financial support for EU students will be available via international student finance options such as a scholarship, grant or bursary, depending on your circumstances.
Tuition Fee Loan for EU Students
If you’re starting a course on or after 1st August 2021, you must have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme to apply for a tuition fee loan.
Maintenance Loan for EU Students
A maintenance loan is also available to help with living costs whilst studying in the UK.
- EU students who have lived in the UK for a least five years are eligible to receive maintenance support
- The amount a student receives is dependent on where they live and study
- Maintenance loans have to be paid back, but not until a student has graduated and is earning over £25,000 per year
Additional Financial Support
Extra financial help and support is also available to students if they:
- Have children
- Have a disability, including a long-term health condition, mental-health condition or specific learning difficulty
- Are studying nursing, midwifery or other NHS related courses
