Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), established in 1823, is one of the UK’s oldest higher education institutions. With a student population of over 25,000, LJMU is a forward-thinking university that blends tradition with modern innovation. Known for its research-driven teaching, the university offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across faculties like Arts, Professional and Social Studies, Science, and Engineering and Technology.
LJMU has an outstanding reputation for its research output, particularly in fields such as Astrophysics, Sports Science, and Environmental Science. The university has achieved significant rankings for research quality and is committed to addressing global challenges through its research. LJMU is one of a few UK universities with its own Centre for Entrepreneurship, which supports students looking to develop business ideas and start-ups, enhancing employability and fostering innovation.
Located in the heart of Liverpool, LJMU offers students a vibrant city experience, with access to the city’s renowned music, arts, and cultural scene. The university’s three campuses are within walking distance of Liverpool’s centre, allowing students to enjoy everything the city has to offer, from historic landmarks to modern shopping and dining options. Liverpool is also well-connected, with an international airport nearby and excellent public transport links.
The University offers English lessons for students, both as in-sessional courses and as pre-sessional courses. These can be standalone lessons or as part of the International Foundation Year. They can also be used to raise an English score as part of university admission requirements.
More than 600 LJMU researchers – 52% of academic staff – were judged on the quality of their scholarship in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework. Of a total of 1,449 research studies assessed, nearly three-quarters (73.1%) were classified as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.
Liverpool John Moores University guarantees all new students a place in university accommodation for the first year of study. Most rooms feature private en-suite bathrooms, although flats with shared bathrooms can be a cheaper option. LJMU cannot guarantee a room in a specific location to every applicant as some locations will be full before the start of the academic year. Liverpool is an affordable place to live as a student, and the Accommodation Office can help those who wish to live in private rented accommodation.
Awarded the European Capital of Culture 2008 in recognition of its rich history and cultural standing, Liverpool is a popular city with students and tourists alike. With world-class architecture and more listed buildings than any city outside London, Liverpool was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2004. The city’s history is contrasted against its reputation as a city of commerce and entertainment.
